A teenage girl broke free and escaped as a man tried to abduct her in Sydney's north-west yesterday, the latest in a string of similar incidents in the area in recent weeks. The 14-year-old girl was walking home from school along Barlow Street in Cambridge Park about 3.20pm yesterday when she heard a car pull up behind her, police said. A man called out from the car, offering the girl a lift home, but she refused and kept walking, police said. Police allege the man then got out of the car, approached the girl from behind and grabbed her upper left arm. But the girl wrenched herself free and ran home. It was not believed she was chased. The alleged attacker was described as of white or European appearance, of medium build, about 170 to 180 centimetres tall and with brown hair. He was driving a dark green late-model car. Yesterday's incident follows a series of attempted abductions in the area on teenagers on their way home from school. This month, a 14-year-old boy broke free after he was grabbed from behind and punched in the stomach by a man in St Marys. A few days before that, an 11-year-old girl was grabbed by the ponytail by a man attempting to abduct her in Blacktown. "I don't think there's any links [between the abduction attempts] at this point," Inspector Paul Skuratowski from St Marys police said. However, he agreed the high frequency of recent abduction attempts in the area was unusual.
