e weapon still lodged in his face.

The incident happened at around 11:30pm on the corner of Marischal Street and the Castlegate, just yards from Aberdeen High Court.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The man was found with some sort of knife stuck in his face. He was only treated at the scene for about five minutes and was then rushed to ARI."

A major investigation was launched, but police have not been able to interview the victim due to his "critical" condition.

Investigating officer DCI Mark Cooper said police were still trying to establish a motive. He said: "At about 11:30pm, there was a confrontation involving four men on Marischal Street, heading up to Castlegate It ended up with one of them being struck in the face with a knife.

"We will be looking at CCTV footage to form part of our inquiry," DCI Cooper said.

"We know that the confrontation started on Marischal Street and one of the men went into the Tilted Wig pub on Castle Street.

"We're looking for people who were in the pub at the time who might be able to tell us anything. It was Tuesday night and the city centre is generally quite busy."

A spokesman for Grampian Police said: "The male sustained significant injury and was transferred by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he remains following surgery. His condition is described as critical."

The victim is believed to be Polish, but police have so far ruled out his nationality as a motive for the assault.

The scene of the attack was cordoned off and Marischal Street remained closed to vehicles while forensic teams combed the scene yesterday.

An employee at a nearby branch of the newsagent RS McColl's was shocked by the vicious attack. She said: "People are questioning it more than talking about it, trying to find out what happened. It's really shocking what's happened."

Andrew May, a councillor who represents the area, said he was disgusted by the attack. He said: "I can't quite believe such a thing could happen.

"For someone to be knifed in the face is hard to imagine. To hear a knife has been used in that way is shocking.

"How another human being could do that to someone is beyond belief."

Grampian Police last night confirmed that a 34-year-old Aberdeen man had been arrested in connection with the incident and a report will be submitted to the procurator-fiscal.
