Traffic was backed up about six miles this morning on Route 101 West after a three-vehicle crash near Exit 2 that started after one of the drivers fell asleep and crossed the median, according to state police. Police said one of the drivers, Jeffrey Campbell, 52, of Eliot, Maine, was heading east on Route 101 in his 2002 Chevrolet pickup when he fell asleep. His vehicle crossed the median into westbound traffic and collided head-on with a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Paul Davis, 51, of Falmouth, Maine. A third vehicle, a 2005 Ford pickup driven by Daniel Corsaut, 22, of Chester, then hit Davis' truck, according to police. Davis was trapped in his truck and had to be extricated by Auburn Fire and Rescue. Police said he was taken to Elliot Hospital and treated for multiple trauma. Campbell had minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene, while Corsaut reported no injuries, according to police. Route 101 west was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours. Traffic was rerouted off the highway at Exit 2, across Route 28, and then back on to 101. State police are investigating the accident. Auburn Police and Rockingham County Sheriff's units assisted at the scene.
